The Career-line Faculty Travel Fund awards grants for career-line and visiting faculty members (.50 FTE and above), to engage in their teaching endeavors or their professional services

Please note: All domestic travel fund requests must be received by the Dean's Office 3 weeks prior to the trip departure date and all international travel fund requests must be received by the Dean’s Office 4 weeks prior to the trip departure date. 

Notice About International Travel – Per University Rule R3-030D, all international travel participants must: Register their University-related travel at least 3 weeks prior to departure date, Enroll in University-affiliated international and emergency evacuation insurance, and Abide by all active travel warnings and restrictions. Failure to do so will result in no reimbursement of travel related expenses and, in some cases, university disciplinary action.

Career-line Faculty Travel Application 2026-27 (FILLABLE) updated 6/10/26

This travel fund is to support Individual Undergraduate or Graduate Students' travel to present or perform their scholarly or creative research at national or international venues. There is a limit of $750 International/$500 National per academic year for each applicant. 

This fund is available on a first-come, first-served basis and will close once the funds are exhausted in this academic year - July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Travel Fund requests for the next academic year (travel after July 1, 2027) will not be accepted until June 1, 2027.

All international travel fund requests must be received by the Dean’s office at least 4 weeks prior to the trip departure date. All non-international travel fund requests must be received by the Dean's office at least 3 week prior to the trip departure date.

Please e-mail a completed application form to Associate Dean Lien Shen and be sure to include a copy of the formal invitation to present or a link to the conference/presenting organization's website listing you as a presenter/performer or be sure to include a paragraph from your department chair, school director, or faculty advisor explaining why this presentation/performance is important to your graduate career and/or education.

Travel that includes three or more students and therefore could be eligible for a CFA FAF grant is not eligible for the CFA Dean's Office Individual Student Travel Fund. Student group travels should seek funding support from the CFA FAF grant and Dean’s Fund for Excellence.

Individual Student Travel Fund Application 2026-27 (FILLABLE) updated 6/10/26

The CFA Faculty Teaching Grants are awarded on a competitive basis in order to stimulate and encourage faculty projects that will enhance their teaching or abet curricular innovation. Both individual and group submissions are welcomed. Proposals may be awarded up to $7,000 for individual or group submissions. Special consideration will be given to faculty members whose applications to external or University level teaching grants were not accepted. The CFA Faculty Course Release Program aims to provide an opportunity for full-time faculty members to request a release from teaching responsibilities (1-course/3-credit hours/.25 FTE equivalent) to support a significant research, teaching, or service project.

How does it work?

• An eligible faculty member submits an application to their Department Chair/School Director. The application must clearly explain a specific opportunity and communicate a clear plan for engaging in a significant research, teaching, or service project.
• The Department Chair/School Director considers all the applications submitted within the unit, and forwards the proposals they wish to support to the Dean’s Office. (Chairs/Directors should take into account any other leaves within the unit, in order to ensure that the release will not negatively impact the unit, and will need to provide a ranking should multiple applications come from the same unit).
• The academic unit must commit to contributing 1/3 of the total request cost (maximum $7,500, with a contribution maximum of $2,500 from the unit).
• The CFA Grants Committee reviews the applications during the spring semester CFA grant cycle and makes recommendations to the Dean.
• The Dean makes the final decision concerning awards.

Who is eligible?

All full-time CFA faculty (tenure-line and career-line) who are not already on leave for the requested semester. Faculty members must not have been awarded a CFA course release or a sabbatical within the past year and should not be eligible for a leave/sabbatical or departmentally awarded course release during the requested semester. Faculty members receiving course load credit or a course release for serving in administrative roles, such as Director of Graduate Studies, may still apply with the support of their Chair/Director. Faculty members may only apply once per academic year.

• • Faculty members not awarded leave/sabbatical or course release in the past year
  • Pre-tenured faculty proposing projects to support tenure

• Faculty members seeking support for significant projects

DESCRIPTION

The Dean will provide Fund for Excellence Awards on a first-come-first-served basis for projects that illustrate work of particularly high quality, as measured by the criteria listed below. Although the funds are primarily intended for student projects, in certain circumstances particularly worthy faculty projects that benefit students may also be considered. All proposed projects should illustrate extraordinary learning and/or research activities. The Fund for Excellence is supported entirely by contributions from generous donors to the College of Fine Arts.

CRITERIA

Financial Matters

• In order to receive a Fund for Excellence Award, other College funds must not be available for the project (e.g., FAF, grad travel).
• Fund for Excellence Awards are not meant to replace what should be covered in the department's/school's base budget.
• The relevant department/school must provide some funding for the project.

The High Caliber of Fund For Excellence Projects

• A Fund for Excellence Award is an indicator of the high caliber of the CFA, as measured by our disciplines. Evidence of high caliber includes, but is not limited to:
  • National/international dissemination and impact
  • Top-tier location/venue
  • A Fund for Excellence Award will be an activity we can report to campus and our disciplines to illustrate the excellence of CFA students

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be accepted at any time, but please keep in mind that:

• A Fund for Excellence application must be made well in advance of the event
• A truly excellent opportunity generally will not be "last minute"
• The Dean will review Fund for Excellence applications approximately once a month

A Fund for Excellence application must include a clear, detailed, and complete budget and a statement of support from your Chair/Director.

The Council of Dee Fellows welcomes applications for Dee Grant awards for the enhancement of teaching. The Council encourages applications from individual faculty and/or small groups of faculty for projects with broad impact on teaching and curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels.\

Strong proposals frequently include: promoting innovative, interdisciplinary educational programs; fostering community engagement; and, promoting the university’s commitment to access and diversity.

Projects funded in recent years have ranged from $1,000 to $12,000.

The funding period for grants awarded in the 2025-26 funding cycle is July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. Proposals for projects that do not fall within the funding period will not be considered.
