The Finer Points

This is a series dedicated to highlighting the insights our students gained during their internships.

Name: LeAnne Hodges, Department of Film & Media Arts

Internship: Motion Foundry Studios, Summer 2019

What responsibilities did you have as an intern?

I helped design and create props for stop-motion animation sets. I also helped out in the puppet fabrication department every once in a while.

What new skills/knowledge did you gain from your internship?

I learned about how to use certain materials to create props. I learned more about the pipeline of stop-motion animation in the industry and the responsibilities of the different departments. Being able to see things up close and how they’re made was invaluable. Also, just learning how to ask for help when I don’t know how to do certain things and it’s okay to make mistakes! That’s how you learn and people not only understand that mistakes happen, but will help guide you in the right direction.

What connections did you make and how do you think those connections may help you in your career?

I got to know an animator who worked for LAIKA and is currently working on a new Henry Selick film! This animator was very helpful in giving my friends and I advice and showing us around his own personal studio. This may help me in the future since we’ve connected on social media and I am able to ask for advice on my work. Getting advice and guidance like may help me build a strong connection and improve my craft.

What advice would you give other students who are interested in a similar internship?

Reach out to places you’re interested in and ask questions! Most people are willing to answer any questions you have. Also, don’t be afraid to contact people multiple times if they are taking a while to respond. People get busy at their jobs and you contacting them reminds them to respond back.

How did your internship compliment your arts education?

Yes! It got me not only working on a film being produced and getting that experience, but it also got me in the space I wanted to be in for a career and learn about how it functions. Plus I was able to create things and use what I learned on my own personal projects for school.

Are there other things you would like to tell us?

Don’t be afraid to get connected with people and places that you’re interested in!
