“O! Had I but followed the arts,” laments Sir Andrew Aguecheek in William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, written in 1601.
Why? Because the arts impacted the human experience in the seventeenth century and they remain crucial to addressing twenty-first century challenges.
Here at the University of Utah College of Fine Arts, we witness this every day. We see how following the arts inspires and ignites creativity, thought, and action. The College of Fine Arts offers a rich and diverse environment for the artists of tomorrow: a place where students and faculty can engage with the artistic and cultural traditions of yesterday through discovering the relevant issues of today.
These discoveries occur within a vibrant community that brings together the Departments of Art & Art History, Film & Media Arts, and Theatre, along with the Schools of Dance and Music. Each area enhances student experience, preparing them for meaningful lives by developing their intellectual capacity to create art, think broadly, and master skills relevant to the twenty-first century.
We can only do this by forming partnerships within the University of Utah and beyond. We can only do this with your help. We are the stewards of the human story. That’s what Shakespeare knew. That’s what the arts do, and that impacts all of us.
