The U School of Dance is thrilled to be hosting a performance of Natosha Washington’s I AM… on Thursday, January 23 at 2pm in the Marriott Center for Dance.
I AM… is presented by Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) as part of the University of Utah’s Dr. Martin Luther King Week celebration. The theme of of this year’s MLK Week is “Learning to Action, Movement Towards Just Communities.” This theme implores members of the U community to make a concerted effort to strive for social justice through participation and continued dedication to raising awareness of inequities and creating fairness wherever is possible.
“Dr. King’s legacy reminds us of his unwavering commitment to equality, nonviolence, and community empowerment. Even today, it continues to inspire us to build inclusive communities,” said LeiLoni McLaughlin, Director, Center for Community and Cultural Engagement. “When we lead with education, openness, and understanding, diverse communities can unite in collective action, forging meaningful connections that strengthen our society as a whole.” Learn about the other MLK Week activities here.
I AM… is a powerful narrative by School of Dance Distinguished Alum Natosha Washington. It weaves through the poignant story of a Black woman, prompting reflection on vulnerability, empathy, and shared humanity.

I AM… is a story of truth. A story of vulnerability. A story of a Black woman. A story that allows one to see, feel, and breathe in the undeniable layers that expose us all to what it means to be human. Does one ever pause to truly see the life experiences of others and what these experiences have done to shape the person next to us? Do we bother to take into account that our own life experiences should be the best tool for learning to empathize, listen, support, and love more deeply? Are you part of the problem or do you choose to stand on the side of solution? And if you sit somewhere in the middle, in the shadows, you too will be exposed...
