This year, U Opera celebrates its 30th consecutive year of a holiday performance featuring "Amahl and the Night Visitors," alongside Salt Lake Symphony at The Grand Theatre. Many look forward to this tradition as a way to ring in the holiday season.

A fan-favorite for decades, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" was originally written specifically for television in 1951 by Gian Carlo Menotti. It tells the story of a young shepherd boy who is visited by Three Kings as they follow a magic star to Bethlehem.

In a new exciting twist, the second half of this year's concert showcases a smorgasbord of holiday pieces by Finzi, Holst, and Handel sure to evoke memories and good cheer.

First, Gustav Holst's "Christmas Day" performed by a quartet of singers staged with dancers from the U School of Dance. Holst's piece is described as a "fantasy of old carols," and concert-goers are sure to recognize the sounds.

Gerald Finzi's "In Terra Pax," is a story of a man walking in the snow in the English countryside, a symphonic imagining of the Christmas Story.

The big finale is none other than four arias from "Messiah," and a Hallelujah Chorus sing-along.
