Friends and Family Honor Beloved Pianist Jed Moss

October 02 2019

Jed Moss spent his career generously sharing his talent with artists of many types and skill levels. In that spirit, his colleagues, friends, and family are establishing a collaborative piano scholarship at the University of Utah to continue his legacy.

“Jed happily worked with any musician, from an eight-year-old instrumental student to internationally renowned soloists,” explained friend and colleague Tina Castellanos.

A prolific, versatile performer, Moss played all over the world as both a soloist and collaborative pianist. He felt equally at home with a wide variety of music, and performed with orchestras and ensembles from the Utah Symphony and Ballet West to Air Supply and Mannheim Steamroller.

“No matter who he worked with, Jed elevated their musicianship,” said Castellanos.

Jed Moss passed away unexpectedly on June 23 of this year. Beloved in the Salt Lake musical community for his generosity, musicianship, and professionalism, his broad circle of colleagues and friends have stepped forward to preserve his memory.

They are creating the Jed Moss Collaborative Piano Scholarship to encourage young pianists to build the skills Jed so valued.

As Jed said, “When we work in a collective, we attain the greatest heights.”

A talented performer in his own right, Jed preferred collaborating with others to create an artform greater than the sum of its parts. He worked with a wide range of instrumentalists, singers, dancers, and other artists.

In under two weeks, the online fundraiser, now live on UStarter, has reach 85% of its initial $10,000 goal. This $10,000 funds an annual Jed Moss Collaborative Piano Scholarship of $1,000 per year for 10 years.

His friends and colleagues hope to eventually reach $25,000 and establish the Jed Moss Collaborative Piano Scholarship Endowment, which preserves Jed’s name and funds a $1,000 scholarship in perpetuity.
