Academic Excellence Scholarship

Students do not apply for this scholarship. They are nominated directly by their CFA Academic Unit. 

The Academic Excellence Scholarship is a University of Utah scholarship for nonresident high school seniors who will be entering freshmen, based on cumulative GPA and course rigor.

The University of Utah recognizes that students with high artistic talent enrich the experiences of the greater university community. The Academic Excellence Scholarship in the CFA recognizes incoming freshmen students who through the audition and portfolio processes demonstrate high artistic merit and potential. This scholarship awards out-of-state students $5,000 a year for up to 4 academic years or graduation, whichever comes first. This scholarship awards out-of-state students full nonresident tuition - fees not included - up to and including 18 hours per semester for 4 academic years or graduation, whichever comes first.

In order to qualify for the Academic Excellence Scholarship in the CFA, students must be:

  • Incoming nonresident freshmen, who demonstrate high artistic merit and potential in a Bachelor's degree area within the College of Fine Arts 
  • Admitted to the University of Utah, and, if applicable, be accepted through audition in the College of Fine Arts' academic unit (School of Dance, School of Music, Department of Theatre, Department of Art & Art History, Department of Film & Media Arts)
  • Nominated by the College of Fine Arts' academic unit 

The Academic Excellence Scholarship in the CFA requires that students who receive and accept this award:

  • Maintain full-time status at the University of Utah for Fall and Spring terms of the award, maintain satisfactory progress toward their degree in their CFA degree, maintain a 3.5 gpa in their major coursework and a cumulative 3.2 gpa at the University of Utah. At a minimum, students must complete at least 24 credit hours every two semesters, 20 of which must be graded.
  • Participate in the CFA Sponsored Student Program, which will connect them with College of Fine Arts academic advisors and faculty mentors.
